Classic old school photo's from Surfing Magazine

My friend Kevin found this classic old Surfing magazine showing Mike Crowe and Thomas Delapinia surfing Maalaea. This dates back to 1985, Mike and Thomas were two of the best surfers to ever surf Maalaea. Thomas has been my glasser for more than 15 years and Mike is a Maui county Police officer here on Maui. Mike is one of the Kazuma team riders that tests and develops new surfboard designs for me. Thomas is one of the few surfers in the world to have clocked a 10 second barrel, we are so lucky to live in Hawaii.

Tanner Hendrickson's new California Groveler Milkman

Here are a few shaping room pictures of Tanner's new California contest boards. Tanner is a special surfer that has the ability to load up on his turns and explode through the snap blowing the tail out the lip on almost every turn. Not common for kids his age so I want to emphasize that strength and give him boards that naturally do that. I decided that with a little extra speed as soon as he gets to his feet, he will be able to hit that big turn without having to work up his speed. Less pumping down the line also looks better and less pumping means more maneuvers per wave. These boards are much more efficient due to the increased planning area under his feet. 1/4" wider and 1/2" shorter does the trick. I also flattened the rocker nose side of his front foot to let the water flow under the board with less resistance. Concave is still the Kazuma trademark Triple Barrel. We had amazing success with his last board which won him $7000.00 last weekend at the Volcom contest.

Tanner Hendrickson and Matt Meola at the Kazuma factory

Tanner and Matt are back on Maui after killing it at the Volcom Newport contest. Tanner won $7000.00 and Matt won $1000.00 for their dominating performances. We spent a few hours today working on the new summer board designs. Our new California Groveler Milkman models already have the Volcom contest victory to validate the designs potential. Check the blog from yesterday and see the air that Matt did. Absolutely crazy...........

Tahiti trip - End of first week

I finally met up with Tahitian surfer Teiva Joyeux. Teiva is well known on Maui as an excellent windsurfer and professional surfer. Teiva has been back at Teahupoo for a few years now and was really excited with his new Shibi.

Teiva Joyeux:
- Francky, this board is just perfect for Teahupoo. You need to catch the wave fast here, the board is just perfect for that, I really have more time to take off on it, making the drop easier. The tail is just beyond my expectations, it's so fast and responsive... Free Hinano dude !

Glad to hear... At the end of the day, most of his friends ordered some Shibi...

It was time for me to go to the harbor and ship my Stand up paddle boards to a small island, Huahine. I will be there for the next 2 weeks with my girlfriend, 2 SUP, and a fishing pole... What else do you need ?.

Kai Barger wins 2009 Oakley Pro Jr

Maui boy Kai Barger won the 2009 Oakley Pro Jr at Trestles, California. Kai destroyed the competition scoring a 8.83 and 9.77 in the finals. Kai's signature backhand attack completely overpowered Davey Cathels 2nd, Dillon Perillo 3rd and Kiron Jabor 4th and for his victory, Kai took home $2500.00 and 1500 tour points. Kai was able to enjoy his victory with the Maui entourage of Matt Meola, Billy Kemper, Monyca Byrn-Wicky, Hank Gaskell and Ola Eleogram.

This prestigious victory confirms to the world that Kai is the true Jr world champion. Going into this event there was a lot of pressure on Kai to produce results, this victory has proven to the world that he is the real deal. Kai was a long time student of Matt's professional coaching program.
