Sup boards for kids

I have been busy shaping highly specialized mini sup boards for kids. These are hybrids of the Pat Fukuda and Milkman models that are designed for the light weight grom. Most kids take to sup surfing naturally and it is a shame to limit their progress with a fat plug designed for an adult. The ones pictured are 7'10"x24"x3.25".

The Kazuma Kids score perfect waves again on Maui. This right slab is one of the kid's favorite spots when the waves are big. Kaimana, Chaz and Joaomarco caught at least 20 barrels each. Pretty amazing considering these kids are still too young to drive.

Check out the home made video of Chaz Kinoshita and Joao Marco Maffini tow surfing Jaws on January 2nd 2011. The conditions were terrible and the wind was crazy strong but the kids are always waiting for Jaws to break and won't miss an opportunity to surf it. We ended up surfing it till dark, another beautiful day in paradise. It is nice to have such an amazing wave in our back yard, I hope the kids know how lucky they are.

When we arrived at Maliko Tuesday morning, the entire bay was closing out and it looked almost impossible to launch. We decided it was worth the risk and launched between sets, Chaz and JoaoMarco did a great job getting clear of the ramp but we still damaged the trailor and one of the skis. Only about 6 ski's managed to launch so it was the least crowded we have seen Jaws in years. We towed for over 4 hours and the kids got some of the best rides of their lives.

Here is Pat Fukuda with his new 9'6" x 29" x 4" SUP model. The Pat Fukuda model is a scaled up version of his performance longboard and features a deep vee-double concave in the tail for drive off the bottom and killer speed when surfed of the tail. Up front there is Pat's special deep nose concave for easy noseriding. This nose concave also helps get into waves easier and cuts through the chop. The full outline has a beautiful curve that is ultra stabile, paddles well, noserides insane and helps promote a smooth, polished surfing style. I think this graceful style is missing from most stand up boards so I am really excited to add this board to the Kazuma model lineup. We make these in any length and dimension but Pat recommends riding them a little over sized.

"Squirrelfish" The next generation kazuma fish

Everyone is asking me what a "Squirrelfish" is and why I used that name for my new magic fish model. The explanation is below. Remember, the Kazuma model names don't really make sense. I never wanted the board model names to be a macho sales pitch and I want the performance of my boards to speak for itself, hence the search for oddball model names.

'Ala'ihi (Hawaiian Squirrelfish)

The Hawaiian squirrelfish is found nowhere else in the world except the Hawaiian Islands and Johnston Island. It is the only endemic squirrelfish among roughly 20 different species of squirrelfishes and soldierfishes known to inhabit Hawaiian reefs.

My new undercover Squirrelfish model has been working Magic. It fits the Kazuma lineup in between the Piglet and the Shibi models. The Squirrelfish has the proven Piglet rocker and triple barrel concave but has a fuller outline up front. This fuller front end works better for front foot surfers that normally overpower and bury the rails on narrower nosed boards. The fuller front also gives the Squirrelfish much better paddling than the Piglet. This model works well 2-3 inches shorter than your normal shortboard and 1 to 1.5" wider.

Yoshiyasu and Naoko receive their new custom Kazuma's in Japan. These one-of-a kind custom Kazuma's were shaped special for Naoko and Yoshiyasu and both have custom colors and graphics. Naoko's is a 7'1"x20"x2.625" mini model and has her special pink fabric inlay which makes this board the only one in the world like it. Yoshiyasu's is a 9'4"x23"x3" classic model also has a custom fabric inlay design and color. I added a bit more tail rocker and a harder edge in the tail to give the board the most lively, exciting turning possible. Of course it will still noseride and glide forever like you would expect from the Kazuma Classic.

I know the board sounds huge but it is so fast and loose that he can do just about anything on the wave. The pictures show how easy it is to break the tail out. Most of the team has new Piglet boards and all agree that it makes small wave surfing easy.

Baker Grant, Chaz Kinoshita and Joao marco Maffini scored a sick secret spot today on the East side of Maui. The boys surfed it all alone and pulled some of the sickest turns. Baker Grant was amazing (and crazy), he would go for air to reverses on the shallow reef shelf and pull almost everything he tried. I have to say, Baker is one of Maui's hidden talents and I think he might be only 16 yrs old which is simply amazing. I am glad that I brought my camera to document the session. Lucky we live on Maui.

Chaz Kinoshita 13 yrs old is always the youngest rider out at Jaws. JoaoMarco Maffini 14 yrs old, is becoming the tube master and has more barrels at Jaws in January and February than anyone. The kids were absolutely amazing out there, they look so comfortable and their training pays off when it gets heavy, they just don't make mistakes. (lucky for me) Tuesday was just the most amazing day ever, we are lucky to live on Maui.

This morning we hit Jaws at 6:15 am, launching in the dark. Of course we were the 1st ones out and scored perfect 20' Jaws for a while by our selves. Chaz and Joaomarco towed for 5 1/2 hours straight and didn't make a single mistake. This was one of the biggest swells of the year and both Chaz and JoaoMarco caught the biggest waves of their lives, we felt like we were in tune. We came in for lunch, re-fueled our skis and went back out for an evening session only to surf it with Alfredo Villas and Kaleo Amedeo catching perfect bombs. As it got dark and everyone was packing up, a huge formed on the horizon and I told Chaz it was time to tow daddy into one. Long story short, I fell in the barrel and ate crap taking 4 waves on the head then making the trip into the rocks in near darkness. I have to admit I was a bit worried but it is nothing new but kids were in shock to see me get so pounded. Luckily Alfredo stuck around in the dark to come rescue me off the rocks, thanks Alfredo for risking your ski to get me. We all returned to the ramp in pitch dark and celebrated a safe surf session.

Jaws on Maui is the most powerfull wave in the world

This is unbelievable and I have never seen this before, a tow board totally destroyed by a single wave. Yesterday I towed Chaz Kinoshita into a smaller 20' wave at Jaws and Chaz pulled into a nice barrel. Because it was a smaller wave, it pinched at the end and Chaz got closed out on. Notice the front inserts, they were snapped and pulled out with his foot still in the strap and the tail was broken in 2 places. This tow board was glassed with 5 layers of 6 oz glass and was as strong as a board could be, I picked Chaz up after this wipeout and his board was in pieces next to him so we are sure it was blown up on that single wave. Jaws is no joke and this proves the power of the spot.

The Kazuma Kids have been having some amazing sessions at Jaws, Maui. Chaz, Joao Marco, Tyler and Imai caught some of the best waves yesterday. In February alone, we have put on 63 hours on our Jaws ski's so the Kids have been getting tons of rides. What impresses me is the fact that the kids can ride for 4 hours straight before wanting to rest. Chaz and I have been towing till dark every day and have had some of the best sessions ever. I have been Training the kids the same way that I Trained Ian Walsh so I am sure that they will be the future jaws standouts.

Imai Devault dominated the Justin contest on Sunday placing 1st in the boy's division and 2nd in the Jr men's division. Imai, pictured here in the bottom 3 shots consistently pulled off the big turns to take the victory.

The top 2 pictures are Joaomarco Maffini who placed 3rd in the boys and 5th in the pro division. Big result for sure.

Here is a glimpse into my shaping room showing the latest jaws towboards. Maui has had the best winter in years which has let me do some amazing r&d on the proven jaws model. These are Sierra Emory's new boards and we have refined them to a whole new level. I can't reveal too much about the boards but you will see Sierra, Ian Walsh, Billy Kemper and myself taking performance to a whole new level.

Chaz Kinoshita got his new ski today. We need to do a few modifications to get it tow ready but he should be getting it on the water tomorrow with his partner Joao Marco. Chaz chose the Kawasaki 1500 4 stroke because he rides Kawasaki motorcycles and loves the brand. In an hour, he will have it all stickered up with his sponsors logos.

Chaz Kinoshita 13 yrs old (left) Joao Marco Maffini 13 yrs old(center) have been training all last week with Alfredo Villanova, getting ready for tomorrow's giant swell. Alfredo is the Kazuma tow team trainer and is working wonders with the two Maui super groms.

Earlier in the week, Matt Kinoshita and Ian Walsh fine tuned Ian's Jaws boards and redesigned his Future tow fins for "Big Monday" Matt and Ian will be on it tomorrow with the Magic new boards. Joao and Chaz will probably watch but if it is less than 30 feet, they will sneak in for a few.

Maui surfer Charlie Linden was the inspiration for my "EGG-O" model. Charlie needed a board that performed like my Milkman shortboard, had the glide of a fish, the turning radius of a pro's board but paddle like a mini tanker. Yes, he wanted it all. If you have ever seen him surf, you know what the board can do. (Charlie rips) This is a picture of Charlie on his 6'0" x 20" x 2.5" squash tail thruster EGG-O. By the way, Charlie doesn't like the name EGG-O but it is better than the "PEPPERMINT PATTY" Actually, I like stupid names for my board models so if any of you out there have funny name suggestions, please let me know. I may just use it for my new board model.

Hank Gaskell's 2010 model

I just made the final revisions to Hank Gaskell's 2010 shortboard design. The board is 6'1" x 18.375" x 2.25" and is a modified Milkman model. Hank is 160 lbs. and we added a bit more concave than we normally do so the board will be faster and bite better in the turns when the water is bumpy. Hank and I have been surfing the point and have felt the need for a quicker bite into the wave in hard turns. Kona winds at the point is a challenge and that kona chop is a problem. Actually, Hookipa is always difficult to surf.

This is LA county ripper Philip Raya with his new 5'10" x 19.5" x 2.3" Piglet model. Philip has been doing some cold water"Cali" testing and has been killing good Topanga point and El Porto. We did the Tri fin with Quad option to make the board super versatile and so far the Tri fin setup with the gmb fins have been working well. The quad setup is a copy of the Shibi model and will really make the board fly when the waves get weak and small. One board does it all? so far so good.

Ian has a good shot at winning as he has been warming up in all the swells that we have been having and his timing has been spot on. Ian is my top big wave protege, I have spent 15 years grooming him for this day. Good luck Ian.

Ian's board is 9'6" x 19.5" x 3.25" classic and is based off the Jaws paddle in boards we have had for years. We ride them smaller and narrower than most people because we get much better control and the boards feel much more comfortable taking off late and inside the boil.

My son Chaz and I surfed some of the best waves Maui has seen in years. One of the local spots was absolutely firing and we were trading off barrel after barrel. Check out the 2nd picture with Chaz in the lip claiming my barrel, I can't think of anything better than taking turns watching each other ride waves like this.

I was riding a 7'6" x 18.5" x 2.5" baby squash classic gun and Chaz was riding his 6'0" x 16.75" x 1.95" classic gun. 6'0" sounds small but is relative in size to my board since chaz is only 95 lbs and 13 years old.

Part of the Kazuma training program is the "in water" coaching. Matt will work one on one with the kids on key points like positioning, timing, wave selection and general wave knowledge. It is amazing how fast the kids learn. Check the pictures of Kawai getting pushed into the wave, perfect positioning will greatly improve performance. Kawai can easily catch waves on her own but getting waves at the critical spot will make her improve much faster. Plus it is much more fun for her. Also, Daize Kinoshita is making a nice drop. We can see from the pictures that she is way too far forward on her board and Matt corrected that on her next wave. Imai Devault has the skills of a 17 year old but is only 12. In these pictures you can see the level of control he has and can break out the tail any time he wants. Moves like this can only come from the proper technique. Last, Matt Kinoshita leading by example. Look at the commitment in his cutback turn, Matt is always the top surfer in the water.

We had an awesome day training at Hookipa today. The waves were really good but it was super crowded. At about 3pm, an 8 ft shark came through the lineup and the Lifeguards closed the beach for about an hour. When the lifeguards opened up the beach, the Kazuma team was on it and had it all to themselves for over an hour. Amazing day for sure.

Melanie Bartels (HAW), 27, was a standout performer throughout the event’s entirety, ousting an international field of competitors including Rebecca Woods (AUS), 25, and Rosanne Hodge (ZAF), 22, on the way to her Semifinals berth. The talented Hawaiian struggled to find a solid score in her battle against Gilmore, bowing out of the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic with a third place finish.

“I just wasn’t in rhythm out there and I couldn’t find anything,” Bartels said. “It’s tough out there, but I’m stoked that I made the Semifinals, it’s a good result, but I just wanted to surf well, I wanted to put on a good performance and I don’t feel like I did that, but that’s how it goes.”

Bartels and Gilmore Lead Opening Day of Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic

DEE WHY, New South Wales (Wednesday, September 30, 2009) – The opening day of the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic saw current ASP World No. 5 Melanie Bartels (HAW), 27, and reigning two-time ASP Women’s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 21, lead the world’s best women’s surfers through Round 1 in two-to-three foot (1 metre) surf at Dee Why.

Bartels surfed impressively throughout her entire opening round heat, but found her two best waves in the back half of her bout to claim the highest heat total of the day, an impressive 15.25 out of 20, while capitalizing on a rare barrel, leaving fellow competitors Rosanne Hodge (ZAF), 22, and Amee Donohe (AUS), 28, needing a combination of scores to top the Hawaiian standout.

“I’d been eyeing that little barrel out there,” Bartels said. “I was just waiting and that wave came to me and I was able to find that little barrel which gave me the good score. It’s been such a long time between events that I forgot I was surfing in a contest out there. I just tried to get a wave and surf.”

The explosive Hawaiian veteran started her year off strong with a runner up finish at the Roxy Pro Gold Coast before suffering a 17th place finish at the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach. Bartels was elated to advance directly through to Round 3 at Dee Why and get the second half of her season off in the right direction.

“Bells is a very hard wave and it was really small when we surfed it, so it was tough for me,” Bartels said. “The waves out here are offshore and bigger than two-foot, so it’s perfect, I’m stoked.”

The Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic holds a waiting period from September 30 through October 5, 2009. Event officials will reconvene at Dee Why at 7am local time tomorrow to assess conditions for the potential start of Round 2 at 8am.
